Are soy-based products, which are high in natural estrogens, safe for women who have survived breast cancer? A new study suggests that they not only are safe but may be beneficial.
Women with the highest consumption of soy (tofu, soy milk or fresh soybeans) had the lowest recurrence rate of breast cancer and the highest survival rate compared to women who did not eat large amounts of soy. Women who ate the most soy were 29 percent less likely to develop recurrent breast cancer and 32 percent less likely to die of breast cancer. This was true whether women had breast cancer that was estrogen receptor positive or negative or whether they were taking the tamoxifen.
